Traveling

I've twice now purchased the travel insurance that comes with Priceline and Orbitz orders. Though I don't think this is an offer limited to those sites, I believe the big air carriers also offer said insurance (confirmed with NWA).

I forgot that this insurance doesn't actually cover changing your mind or any other reason beyond getting sick or fired from your job or the airlines fucking up big time. So I'm hoping this note reminds me that this insurance really just isn't worth it, to me.

That being said, I've scheduled a flight to Orlando to see a shuttle launch, with my bud voxen. This is going to be one of the last shuttle launches of NASA's Space Shuttle. Which gets retired in 2010. This should be a fun event.

Bad TV

So Heroes season <s>1</s> 4, volume 5 has begun.

Remember my post about it earlier?

Well once again we have another season of the same crap television.

Good boy Peter is saving lives as an EMT. And once again is avoiding his family. Now with Sylar unknowingly pretending to be Nathan, don't you think it would be incredibly more interesting if the brothers were really close? Half a season in, boom Pete finds out his bro is dead and Sylar has been that friend he wanted his brother to be.

And now for everyone to have trust issues again. Nice guy Parkman is once again full of self-doubt. I'd have to wonder is this really how people would behave if they could read minds? But then again he's off the mind-reading, except to make sure his wife will never leave him. What is new though is he is being tormented by the Sylar in his head. Though the torment by Sylar could be pretty good, especially if it is actually just Parkman being a little schizo.

Looks like the season villains this year is going to be a bunch of carnies in their traveling carnival. Possible Carnivàle parallels?

There are some other thoughts, but I just got bored with thinking about it.

Hmm, I might just be done with this show.

Fire and Rock Band?

So I have a shit ton of fire wood.
seriously, too much wood. (That's what she said)

Anyhow, too much wood! Possibly fire hazard of some sort.

Let's burn this shit up and celebrate with some rock band: Beatles playing.

You free Friday?

Also, bring a car or a truck or something. I want to give you my wood. As much as you can fit into your trunk. I've just got too much wood going on. If you've got room for it, I'd like to deposit it with you. Tell your mom that if she'd like I have some wood for her also.

Help me help you light a fire deep inside.

Serious though, wood fire and rock band? Friday night, let's say starting at 7?

I'm back from ten days in San FranCISCO

I'm finally home after having spent several days in San Francisco.
The first five days were spent at Cisco Live. I would say I learned quite a bit at this conference, but I think the format of the presentations were not the best for learning. So in the end I think I learned less than I planned. However, I party about twice as much as I had planned. So it all evens out?

It was a crazy trip.

In short here are some points of this trip.

Very late getting to the airport heading to San Fran. To make things even more hectic, the woman ahead of me in the security line had a printer with her! A big boxy printer. In her suitcase! What the? I thought I was going to miss my flight because of a woman trying to bring her printer with her. It worked out though.

Parc 55 is a very nice hotel and I had a great room

The actual conference was huge with lots to learn and absorb. I learned about Optimized Edge Routing.

NetQOS throws one hell of a party

Cisco throws an even more amazing party. I've now seen in concert, Sugar Hill Gang, Howard Jones, Tears for Fears, Devo, the Bangles, and the B-52s

I was able to see my friends and old co-workers. To include, Al and Sarah, DD and KT, Derek and Nichja, and Kris Overbo.

Saw Point Break Live... Which was amazing!

Google is the best place ever. I also really like Mozilla

and other random things

I also got into a bad bike accident about two hours before leaving for the airport. I did end up saving my unguarded face and skull by doing some fancy rolling. However, my shoulder is hurting and my ankle is swollen.

San Francisco is a great place. I have many good things to say about it. In part though, I'm reminded why I love Minneapolis.

I'm really tired.

Anyone can act as well as Keanu

So today I saw Point Break Live.

The play's unique feature is that audience members volunteer to play Keanu Reeves' character Johnny Utah.

So one of the volunteers is chosen by the audience and then is guided around through the play by the cue card woman. And the rest of the cast is hired actors, who overplay their parts and make everything even more entertaining and crazy. The parody does not stop with the movie; they also parody the actors of the original movie roles. So Busey's character is a little more crazy and a complete drug user and alcoholic.

I guess the show had a great run in Minneapolis years ago, but I’m hoping one day it comes back. It was just too much fun.

In short, the show was great fun. This week in San Fran has been filled with craziness.

SFD 8

Friends, Family, FANS,

SFD 8: The Reunion Tour

Coming to Minneapolis on July 19th, 2009.

That's right! Spectacular Food Day IS BACK! SFD 8 will be hosted by Elizabeth and Mike Borchert at their home on July 19th. Food will be ready for serving at 4pm.

People are welcome to come early to prepare meals or just mingle.

For those unaware:
SFD is Spectacular Food Day. What is SFD? It's somewhat of a potluck, except people bring meals that they fancy to be Spectacular. No matter what it is, soup, entree, salad, dessert... if you are a wizard at making this meal or you know it to be top quality, then bake it up and bring it in. Whatever it is; if it's amazing, exhilarating, or spectacular, it has a place at SFD.

I generally say it's a good idea for people who have plans to share them so that as much variety is served as possible. So let us know you are coming and let us know what you are making. Eat and be well my friends.

This entry to be duplicated as a facebook event.
Any questions can be posted here, e-mailed directly to me, commented on within facebook.

24 Films Great Films Too Painful to Watch Twice

So Matt posted this AV article about movies too painful to watch twice. I feel a strong need to see all of these films. Actually the need isn't very strong, it's just a minor need really.

Anyhow, I'm kind of interested to see these films for two reasons. One to see the films for their supposed quality, because I enjoy stories just that much. Also to take an outside view of the technical aspects of the story telling, direction, art design, acting and such. To see how those techniques help tell said story. Secondly, these movies have a better chance of being more compelling and unique stories because they seem to are an window to a world which will be ever so unfamiliar to me.

Anyhow here is the list, plus the addition of movies I'd argue belong on this list: (I've striked out the ones I've seen.

1. <s>Requiem For A Dream (2000)</s>
2. <s>Dancer In The Dark </s>(2000)
3. <s></s><strike><s>The Passion Of Joan Of Arc </s>(1928)</strike>
4. The Seventh Continent (1989)
5. Winter Light (1962)
6. Bad Lieutenant (1992)
7. Straw Dogs (1971)
<strike>8. Audition (1999)</strike>
9. Sick: The Life And Death Of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997)
10. Come And See (1985)
11. In A Year Of 13 Moons (1978)
12. Safe (1995)
13. <s>Irreversible (2002)</s>
14. <s>Boys Don't Cry (1999)</s>
15. Grave Of The Fireflies (1988)
16. When The Wind Blows (1986)
17. Leaving Las Vegas (1996)
18. Jonestown: The Life And Death Of Peoples Temple (2006)
19. S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine (2003)
20. The Last House On The Left (1972)
21. Million Dollar Baby (2004)
22. United 93 (2006)
23. Lilya 4-Ever (2002)
24. Nil By Mouth (1997)

Additions:
Matt also suggests Murder in the First
and I suggest <s>The Assassination of Richard Nixon</s>

Heroes the TV show

Ok so Heroes basically starts and ends the same every volume -- you can't even say season anymore.

1. They kill Sylar (except in volume 2 where he actually gets his powers back)
2. Nathan Petrelli starts out bad, but soon becomes the good guy
3. Clarie hates her daddy, then loves her daddy
4. Parkman gains self-confidence and stands his ground
5. Noah joins "the company" and his secrets are all revealed and he's not actually the bad guy you all might have thought
6. Noah makes more secrets
7. Ali Larter Dies
8. Ali Larter screws Nathan Petrelli (not in volume 4)
9. A different pretty blonde dies (Elle, Daphne, waitress Camille, Claire's biological mom)
10. Sylar finds out about his real parents
11. People lose or simply forget their powers (you know for when the story calls for it)
12. Peter Petrelli fights with his mom and brother, gets all confused, and has some really uncomfortable moments with his niece
13. Hiro and Ando end up road tripping
14. The producers fail to capture your interest with their new attractive Hero
15. Parkman gets a child (you'd think that he'd be driving a mini-van by now)
16. Nathan Petrelli almost dies or in fact does die
17. Peter Petrelli saves the day
18. Very un-epic final battle scene

Anyhow, the show is one big repeat after the another. Which is funny considering they changed the writing staff at least once.

But I should add that the show sometimes does really interesting things. Sending Hiro back in time to meet and ultimately become his childhood hero. That's good stuff. However, the show seems to always fall short of doing it justice. Take for example the ending of the most recent volume, volume 4.

Sylar kills Nathan Petrelli, in a pretty unimpressive epic final fight (another common theme, I'm adding that to the list above). He is then captured by Peter with a clever switch-a-roo trick. Which was pretty good, if you consider that to do this Peter and the rest knew they were going to let someone close to the President die.

So to resolve the situation (and possibly also to resolve Zachary Quinto leaving the show, he is a big movie star now) Angela Petrelli, Noah and Parkman decide that Sylar will replace Nathan.

You see earlier in the season Sylar gained the ability to shape shift and even earlier than that he learn how to get a person's memory/life story. So Parkman wakes up Sylar and controls his mind to make him believe that Sylar no longer exists and that he is now Nathan. So now the Senator is alive, Sylar is basically dead, a mother has her son, and the heroes have a person in DC who will fight for their rights.

Leaving Noah, Angela, and Parkman with one big secret and Nathan Petrelli is now just a suit that Sylar unknowingly wears.

You see this is good story with a lot of awesome scenarios possible. But I imagine the good people at NBC are just going to fall short on this one. For example they already failed to realize that this premise is based on really stupid logic. Why? Because Nathan didn't actually have to stay dead. You see they've already showed us that Clarie's blood can heal people even after death. This I believe happens twice in the series, once with her dead father Noah. Something Noah is aware of, but just happens to forget at this very moment.

So the people in the room decide that the best course of action is to turn Sylar into Nathan? Not get Clarie --who is rooms away-- to sprinkle a little blood on her dead biological dad's corpse? Seriously people!

Oh and dead Ali Larter is back. And I'm not sure, but I think she's pissed. It is sort of challenging to figure out what her motives are, considering she's naked and smirking 50% of her screen time.

Now I'm no writer, but I think I get this one simple concept. When telling the further adventures of ______, you don't repeat the same struggles/story. You give the characters new challenges, new ways to grow. This show fails that on every level.

Parkman is a very good example of that. First season Parkman was very easy to relate to. And as Parkman grows, so do we the audience. So next season, you tell a different story and put Parkman through different challenges. You see, we the audience aren't the same, we also grew and matured. So should your characters.

/end rant

Terminator 4

So I suspect Terminator 4: Salvation will end with John Connor sending his father back in time. In this movie they will learn that the Terminators can look like humans and discover Skynet's plan to terminate Sarah Connor before she can give birth to John Connor.

If it was a futurama Terminator movie, there would be an attack on the faculty as they were sending Reese back in time to Terminator 1. Reese would die, and John Connor would have to go back in time and pretend to be Reese.

Meaning, John Connor is John Connor's father!

Why Television is stupid! Or at the very least production companies.

It just occurs to me that Weeds is on it's fourth or fifth season and Carnival didn't make it past two.

Fuck you HBO. And well I guess Showtime as well!

I guess it's minimally OK because Weeds sucked after second season anyhow.

My Lucky Court Day

Today I went to court for a speeding ticket.

On Dec. 26th I got a ticket for speeding; 74 in a 55.
I called sometime in January and pleaded Not Guilty. Which resulted in today's trial.
I got there today two hours early and sat around reading magazines and browsing the internet from my blackberry.

At about ten to two, I decided the cop wasn't going to show up and I'd probably have the case dismissed.
Five minutes after two I met the County Attorney and had a small meeting with him before getting called into his office to discuss.
He played a little hard at first and then said something to the effect of it won't go on my record and I could just paid the fine. I replied with, or I can go to the trial right now and win because your cop isn't here. Right?
He agreed, we waited a few minutes, saw the judge and he dismissed the case. So yay me. I avoided being "responsible for my actions".

This leave with a few thoughts.

When the County Attorney gave me the option to not have it go on my record, I almost took it. Not because I was worried about losing the trial, but because I felt a sense of responsibility. I choose not to because I don't really have the money to pay and I didn't really want to pay for something I'm generally pretty good about. I saw a clean way out and I took it. I feel maybe a little guilt over this I guess, but mostly I feel pretty good about it all.

Also I started to wonder about the cop. Why the hell would he show up? Does he get paid to show up? If not, why waste your off-hours? I remember asking him after getting the ticket if he'd be at the trial, he gave some pretty unexciting answer that didn't convinence if he would or would not be there.

This system is rather interesting. On one hand I think they just expect people to pay their fines and move on. But they have a system in place that is important for many reasons, though I'm guessing not to fight speeding tickets. So I wonder what the world would be like if every speeding ticket was contested. That's a lot of hours cops would be stuck in trials. I think the balance is really interesting.

On the way home I stopped by Trader Joe's and got exactly $54.00 in food. Because it was exactly $54, I one a chance to spin the "wheel of fortune". I won a free reusable bag! I already have around ten, but one extra never hurts. I think someone could say today was my lucky day.

Oh that and D got me Wii Fit for my birthday (which is about a month a way). I believe the timing has something to do with often guessing what gifts she got me before getting them in my hands. So she wanted to surprise me. And I was! (I spent about three minutes wondering what I recently order from Amazon.) Though now that I think about it her question about whether or not I would be at work today was sort of telling.

Bad Movie Brunch

It has been a plan of mine for a while now to continue the tradition of bad movie brunches that Al used to host. However, having less than a iron stomach than Al, I will be adding some personal touches.

Starting this Sunday I will be hosting high-adventure myth and monsters movie brunches. Beginning this week with Krull. People can start showing up at 11am and the movie will begin at noon. Bring whatever foods you wish to eat or share.

Here is a preview of the movies to come:
Dungeons and Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God (the better sequel)
The Sword and the Sorcerer
Dragonslayer
Eragon
Ladyhawke
The Scourge of Worlds: A Dungeons & Dragons Adventure (this is an interactive movie! well see about it)
Deathstalker
Willow

Who of you are brave enough to make such a voyage?

Free Music!

Rock Band has announced their free 20 song pack today. You can find a quick link to the youtube and myspace page of each of these songs here.

So far I don't recognize any of the music or bands. I like, maybe, a good third of the songs I've heard so far and none of it is offensive to my ears.

All worth the price of free though.

List here:

The 88 - "Sons and Daughters"
Authority Zero - "No Regrets"
Between the Buried and Me - "Prequel To The Sequel"
The Cab - "Bounce"
The Chevelles - "Get It On"
The Cocktail Slippers - "Give It To Me"
Dealership - "Database Corrupted"
Endeverafter - "I Wanna Be Your Man"
The Ghost Hounds - "Ashes To Fire"
Hollywood Undead - "Young" My favorite so far, kind of reminds me of Eminem song (though it gets a little too busy at parts)
Kutless - "The Feeling"
The Len Price 3 - "If I Ain't Got You" (Is this song actually only 32 seconds long?)
Lesley Roy - "I'm Gone, I'm Going"
Opiate for the Masses - "Burn You Down"
Semi-Precious Weapons - "Magnetic Baby"
Shaimus - "Like a Fool"
Thenewno2" - Crazy Tuesday"
Tickle Me Pink - "The Time Is Wrong"
Underoath - "Desperate Times, Desperate Measures"
X Japan - "I.V."

Running Update

This week has been full of suckness. I've been sick since basically Monday. I even had to take Tuesday off of work. So I haven't been able to do my weekly runs.

So now I'm sort of worried about next week. How much edge will I have lost?
We'll see.

Last time I ran though, which was a Saturday, I accomplished two things.
1. I was able to maintain a pace, which I've found to be mildly difficult. Sometimes I just want to jog faster and sometimes slower, so I've been trying to keep going at one solid pace.
2. I was able to run further than what was required of me, that was nice. I could have probably ran even longer but I got to the end of my run and had appointments to keep.

Also I ran without my shirt on, does that mean I went up a level?

Are you tired of media controlled images of beauty?

Have you been told to wear a bag or go back to the right decade?
Maybe you know the pain of being just a little different.

Are you spending your hard earned money on hair layers and coloring; wearing those awkward Paris nap-sack dresses just to fit in?

Do you still feel alone?
